Sometimes when employees are fired, they often feel as if they were wrongfully terminated. Florida follows the employment-at-will standard. This means that an employer can terminate an employee at any time, for any reason, with or without notice, regardless of whether the employer has a good reason, a bad reason or even no reason at all to terminate you. There are some instances where this standard is not used. The three most common exceptions to the employment-at-will standard include:

1) The presence of an employment CONTRACT;

2) DISCRIMINATION against the employee by the employer; and

3) RETALIATION against the employee by the employer.

There may be special circumstances from state to state. A person who is looking for answers should make sure to consult his or her home state which may create other exceptions to the employment-at-will standard which may provide another exception for wrongful termination or wrongful discharge other than those exceptions stated here.
